Gee, what a surprise this morning….. rain and clouds…. light SW winds, WSW 8-9ft @ 10 sec’s….. a place with Southern protection just might be ok……. 46-50 air temp today… water 52. Just did a check on the weather channel….they say that our weather will break around May 6th……. wtf??? Thursday W 12ft @ 10 sec’s Sw winds. Friday drops to WNW 10ft in the am, W8ft in thepm with NW winds 15-20…. Saturday actually looking OK…. WNW 6-7ft with light NW Winds….. that place south of us might be a good call. Sunday, NW6ft with light N winds….. same place…. Monday NW 6-7ft with N winds 10-15mph….. ???????
So…. this morning, we had a nice surprise… Sandy B came by for Coffee …… yes , he can drive now….and, he will come to work on Saturday! 12p to close (if he lasts….) Just be damn good to get another old surfer in the place….. We are looking to hire another OLD SURFER to work with Sandy and I…… must be OLD….. military is a plus….. and, yes, I am serious! With all this good news, yesterday we had a visit from Flounder…… and of course his very nice wife, Jess….. his new name will be “Cave Man Flounder”, as he seems to do well working with rocks as tools….. this will be explained in this mornings visitors blog……..
FLOUNDERS BLOG – SPECIAL ADDITION
As i have told you before, you can learn a lot from a little drive down to the coast, and yesterday was no exception.
Smokin Hot and i were enjoying the drive, cruising along over the coast range, about 20 miles outside of Cannon Beach when one of those little lights came on on the dash board. Never good. Little lights on the dash don’t generally come on to tell you things are going great, and this one was no exception. This little light was letting us know that there was some sort of problem with a tire. I was figuring it was just low pressure. Wishful thinking. A short time later that familiar “Thump-Thump-Thump” sound drifted in from the window.
Yep, flat tire. No problem, i have changed my share of flat tires, and figured this one was going to be just as smooth. Uh, no. Turns out the mechanism that lowers the spare from underneath the car is broke…….Now here is where the lessons start to come into play.
Anybody can be in a good mood when things are going fine. The true test is when things are not exactly going your way. Smokin Hot was a champ. Don’t get me wrong, thats one of her strengths, positive attitude no matter what, but usually when you deliver news like “Uh, hey we are a little screwed here” they don’t take it well. Not her. She want’s to get under the damn thing broken hip and all and help, jokes flying all the while. Love that girl. Just one of those moments in life that re-afirm how lucky you are. Lesson learned.
Well, lesson two is that you should always carry a few emergency tools and such in your car. Let me rephrase that. In both your cars. Understand, my jeep has everything necessary to survive anything short of a nuclear winter, but it appears i fell into a bit of a lull in preparedness with Smokin Hot’s car, figuring with a newer car it wasn’t necessary. So that left me getting very creative with some rocks and the jack iron, which had us laughing our asses off.
Well, after only breaking one finger (really) i was able to get the spare loose, change the tire and get on the way back down to the coast.
Great as always to see Mark and Maria, even got to see Emma. Now comes lesson three. Listen to that little voice. So, i almost buy a new board. Damn tempted, actually. Then that little voice is talking. If i have learned one thing as i get older, its listen to that inner voice. And as much as it was killing me, it was telling me no. So the board stayed in the shop and we headed home after letting the dog have some fun on the beach. (Yes Mark, i picked up his crap).
Turns out it was a good choice. Jess took her car in to the shops when we got back, and it turns out all of the tires are a little low on tread, so we made a $800.00 contribution to Les Schwab’s kids college fund. Yep, listen to that inner voice. No new board, but i don’t have to worry about the wife getting a flat or worse. Works for me.
All in all, a great day. Time with my gal, time with good friends (unfortunately cut short by the emergency vehicle repairs), and a few moments on the beach.
Life is good today.
Take Care of Each Other,
Flounder
And this one from Ryan , the joys of being a new father……
Got restless and hit it last night. Evening glass at Indian wasn’t bad. Only one other guy out, head high sets and the left was firing every now and again. Good thing cause it was a rough night with the kiddo and I would have gotten in big trouble trying to go this morning. The kiddo was born 3 weeks ago. http://chincurrents.wordpress.com/2010/04/08/my-best-catch-yet/
Got this from Sam in Olympia, Wa., seems some lowlife punks ripped off some of his boards… if you see or hear, give him a call….
hey thanks for helpin me out! -5″10 handmade wooden twin fin fish with blue streak on nose(this one is my baby with my blood sweat and tears inside) -6’2 shortboard “snap” brand with a large bad ass skull decal on bottom -6’8 shortboard with “BYB” sticker on top -7’0 fun shape with “Surf Concepts” decal thanks again! -Sam Hardy 914 316 8509 olympia
This one from Paul C. just a little north of us….
Incredible. Since I started shaping I have developed a deeper appreciation for what goes into making a board. I think that any handmade board deserves respect regardless of where it’s made or who does it, but Gary’s folks are the Carlos Santanas and a lot of other manufacturers are the guitarists playing in the local bar (a real mixed bag).

Well…… someone is having a bad morning…… looks like no one got hurt, and the car didn’t roll…… Gordon and I got out this morning for a nice paddle…. if a person was prone to seasickness, it would not be a good morning…. pretty rough out there, but did get the new board in the water, but, I have no idea how it will handle on a nice day….. but, did feel good to get wet and paddle (alot!)…… May get better as the tide gets in around 10:30 or so…… WNW 4-5ft @ 6 sec’s with light SE winds….. later today, builds to WSW 10-12ft @ 10 sec’s with SE winds 15-20mph. High tide around 11:45a, minus low tide at 5:40p. Rest of the week looks…… well, less than desirable…… Mon – Frid WSW 10-15ft with SW / W winds 15-20+, and cloudy….. Friday night dropping to WNW 10ft with NW winds 10-20mph, Saturday WNW8-10ft with NW winds 10mph. Sunday might drop to WNW 7-8ft with light NW winds.
Had a busy weekend…… Talked to the Sandy B…. he sounds pretty good…. still trying to get his new board over to him….. time….. just need more! The new Black board has caused quite a stir….going to order a couple more variations of it…. never 2 the same, and will be the SB shapes…. SB11 & SB 12……. Linden will do the shaping, and JT the glassing…. While I was down south, had an opportunity to spend quite a bit of time with Gary Linden, and Biker, who owns Dreg’s skateboards….. sort of hit me as I was driving back…. we at the shop are pretty fortunate to have has one of our shapers, a guy who has been shaping since 67, paddles into 40 ft. waves, and in the big wave arena, is a star, even being 60+yrs old….. something to think about…and, he is doing all the shaping at his shop….he has no “ghost” shapers working, so when you order one, it is a “Linden”…….. Then spent time with Biker….. damn, talk about sets of balls…… I thought it was impressive when I saw a video of him being towed behind a car at 68mph, on one of his boards, but then when I was there, he brought one out at 90+mph…… that is just crazy…. but then I guess he might know a thing or two about building skateboards….. and, he also was the “oh shit” waverunner driver for the Todo’s contest, and has been known to ride some sizeable waves as well…… Both, extremely nice guys!!!
So….. enough of my morning stuff…… here is Flounder’s Visitors Blog…. what a smartass…… but funny!!!
Hey,
Welcome back road warrior. Hope the trip went well, I read about a guy that matched your description getting anally sodomized in Northern California at a rest stop, if it was you don?t worry I wont spread it around too much?..

In a heartfelt effort to assist you when you go out of town in the future, I have provided you with a generic Surf Report that can be sent out every morning.
I have included some ?Flounder Comments? in italic font in the (). I do this because I care??.
Surf Report for Insert Date Here (What does it matter ? they all read about the same)
Well, it was damn chilly when I got to the shop this morning (No Shit! Chilly on the Oregon Coast in March? Go figure?) Temp is about 45 degrees (It is actually closer to 53, but old people feel colder) Should warm up as the day goes on (Really???Weird how that happens? Gotta be one of my favorite Mekenas statements) Drove up to Indian, big tree blocking the road, had to pull it out of the way with the van (?Big Tree? = 3 inch diameter branch that a chipmunk was dragging away before you got there) Lots of dog crap in the parking lot (If he only knew that his friends plant it there on purpose just to get a rise out of him) Decent wind out of the North, but it could shift later (when the hell is later???) Report calls for 4-6ft at 14 seconds, looks more like 7-9 at 12 seconds, but it should clean up later, (never does) when more water moves in Rest of the week looks about the same (Never is?the next day it will be about 12ft, then 2ft the day after that ? surf forecasting is mostly bullshit folks in case you haven?t figured that out)
Headed over to The Cove to check that out (Truth is you had no intention of surfing you just wanted to sit and shoot the shit with Sandy and make fun of people like me trying to surf) Had to get back to the shop, lots to do today, gonna be a rough one (Hmmm, ?Lots to do?, sit outside and discuss how screwed up Cannon Beach politics are, play with a few ?toys? upstairs, yep, sounds tough day)
Hope this helps you for the next time you go out of town?..
