Was a nice weekend in the shop, had alot of people stop by that we hadn't seen in a while........ amazing how the sun can get people out...... now frowns! I have had a lot of comments on the article I had sent out to Oregon surfers about some localism, with more people wanting to know how I felt about the situation..... I think I will put some more thought to it, and add it on our blog page only, as not to bore the readers of this morning emails...... but, why the hell did the person drag "Cannon Beach" into it, as none of this happened here, and what ever happened to surfing for the pure pleasure and fun of it!???! Yep.... More later..... Have a great day!!! Sun is out..... hope it is dry where you are! Mom, hope you get a decent roofer to show up down there.... damn tarps on the roof, what the hell!?!?! Rain in S cal........

I really enjoy the daily surf reports and commentary, but I'm e- mailing today to thank you for posting the notice on the Mavericks Contest last week. I just happened to be visiting my girlfriend in San Jose last weekend; when I go up on sat. am, I read your post and immediately jumped in the car and headed to half moon bay. Needless to say, what an experience!! It was absolutely amazing to see guys dropping in on 30-40 foot waves!!! It was a once in a lifetime opportunity, that I would have missed if you had not posted that announcement. Thanks. -pat

Sun is out, going to be another great day here at the beach! Got out this morning, and got a good spanking.... or worked might be a better description..... low tide is a bit brutal for the old guy..... as the tide gets in, should be a ton of fun.... Swell this morning was well overhead, saw a couple that could have been double..... so much for that W 5ft report.... but, looks as the tide comes in , the swell is going to drop to about W5-6 ft @ 6-15 sec's. Water was 51, the air was about 47..... low tide just about now, 9a..... high tide at 3p today. So....at least I got some exercise....... Stuckup, Bryce and Nate got a few with the short boards...... the smaller sets were about shoulder to head..... E winds about 15-20mph today. Friday looking good as well! Sunshine through the weekend! WSW 5-6ft @ 12 sec's with E winds 20mph, low tide at 9:30am, high at 3:45p Saturday, sunshine, WSW 7/8ft @ 13 sec's , SE winds 15+. Sunday W 5/6ft with SE winds 20mph Monday W 6-7ft with S winds 20mph, Tuesday SW 7-8ft.....

Air temp this morning, was about 39, but the sun is up, and like yesterday, will warm up to the high 50's here at the beach this week. Sunshine is the call through Sunday...... Pretty busy morning.... did the store stuff early, then got up to Indian around day break.... decided on a short hike, as the surf is still junky, probably will need another day to clean up the bumps..... North end rip is huge! On the way up, had to swerve to miss the herds of Elk up there, actually was about 4 ft from a couple, that just wanted to stare..... so, just happened to have the picture of Patterson in the Van, and scared the hell out of them! Surf today is WSW 7-8ft @ 9-13 sec's with light NW winds. Air temp and water temp, about the same... 51. Overcast this morning, but no heavy tidal surges. Low tide was ay 7:45am, high tide at 1:40p today. Wed. W 8-10ft @ 13 sec's, light NE winds, 8:20a low tide. Thursday (rumor has it the flounder will make an appearance) W 5-6ft @ 13 sec's, sun will be out for about 6 days..... Friday WSW 4-5ft @ 13 sec's with E winds 15mph. Sat. WSW6-7ft @ 13 sec's with E winds 12-15mph. Sunday SW 4-5ft @ 13 sec's with E winds 10mph. Monday WSW6ft @ 13sec's and E winds 12mph. There was a crew up there as I was leaving, filming a tv commercial.... I was really tempted to stay, as it was for Ensure....... hell, I will try anything! so..... got a couple of visitor blogs this morning, that I wanted to share...... first one is from Paul in Warrenton...he is shaping a few boards, and this is one of them.... Hi friends, for your winter inspiration here's some photos of the board I shaped last weekend. The pix are taken in the shaping bay that I set up in our garage. This board will net out to about 7'10" x 24.5" x 3.5". Big wide pin with a pointy nose. Glassing is next, hopefully it will come out as cool as I can envision in my mind....I'll put a single fin on and I think it should be fun to ride in the Jetty waves. Hey Mark, tell the washup and get rescued guy that all he has to do is paddle out on a nice sunny waist high day, and he'll be fine. It's all about knowing our limitations. As I age I realize I'm likely surfing as well as I ever will.....but I'm a hell of a long way from quitting. When I reach 80 I hope to be paddling for kneeslappers on a 11' that I have to drag to the water, the laughing teenagers can kiss my old ass. Pablo p.s., muchas gracias to Mr. Mekenas for bringing me blanks from cali. And, from "THE FLOUNDER": FLOUNDERS BLOG Wow! what a difference a escalator ride can make! So, I had already been down in San Diego for about 4 days attended a work conference at the Convention Center, which was taking place in most of the upstairs area, so every time i passed by the downstairs i would see the folks setting up for the ASR (Action Sports Retail) Show. The stuff i was dealing with upstairs at my conference was a little wacky...(you don't tell people in my line of work to try to juggle balloons as a way to teach something else) and stuffy...lots of suits and ties. I did not fit in, but since i had the ASR as my "light at the end of the tunnel" i was surviving. It wasn't all bad, because i had the nights free and Smokin Hot flew down to meet me about three days into it. Then D Day hits...the ASR opens up....I cut our early from my meetings upstairs and ride the escalator down to meet Mark in the lobby and he and i and his sister and Smokin Hot make the rounds through the show. Lots of really nice folks, lots of cool surf stuff, and more fake boobs than i have ever seen in my whole life! Each of the major retail booths had hired skinny little over tanned hotties with racks bigger than a large babies head to stand around their booths and take pictures with horny surf shop owners. Wacky thing was that they all knew Mark by name.......I think he is actually treated like a God in some small countries. I met up with this one gal who swore she had a nude picture of Mark glassed into her surf board. I have included a photo of her in case any of you recognize her. She said the tattoo which was a work in progress will be a tribute to Mark when it is done. Poor Kid. Had a great time, and i have to say, there is no way in hell Marks sister Mo is really his sister. Way to nice, and smart. No insult intended Mrs. Mekenas, but i think one of the two got mixed up at the hospital, i will let you decide which one. Great gal, passionate about what she does, and fun to hang out with. Mark, he is kinda like a Slinky. Not that much fun to play with, but you still get a smile every time you push him down the stairs. Damn shame about the incident at Mavericks, However that was nothing compared to what happened one time at the Founders White Water Invitational. We had a sneaker wave come in one year and almost take a kids shovel and pail into the surf, and it actually partially tore down a sand castle. It was ugly. Just goes to show how dangerous the whitewater can be. Take Care of Each Other, Flounder

Cold this morning, was about 39 when I drove the "great white" up to Indian..... (some notes on the blog about the mess I found up there, too nasty to send it out the usual emails)..... Cold, surf is still big.... W 11-15ft @ 10-14sec's, low tide at 7:10, but the surges were already putting water up on the rocks. high tide around 1p. But, the swell should start to drop as the day goes on..... Wed afternoon and Thursday look to be the best days this week...... it will be needed!! I have decided to start doing the visitors blog, as they come in, rather than just one day.... I was remiss last week..... Busy weekend though, Mavericks, some excitement there..... over in the UK, Ireland got slammed by the French, but Wales took out Scotland..... Olympics were pretty good, even the stock car races were interesting..... and we worked..... First blog entry is from Marcus on his ongoing building of the Wasabi farm..... Ever notice that storms arrive on the heels of an incoming tide? After nearly half my life near and on the ocean, I hadn't either. Saturday was another example that proved this true again. Something about the momentum of the tide rising enables the wind and rain. This seems to be true with life as well. Difficulties seem to capitalize on momentum. They set themselves in front of you with alarming encroachment. The farm has taught me to wear the appropriate clothing, put your hood up and accept that progress will be retarded once these elements descend upon you. Instead of curing the rain, embrace it, its effect on the work progress and allow it to be. To date, most of our progress has been subterranean. Deep holes, cement, site clearance. It?s been somewhat inconspicuous. Last weekend was no different. In fact, all the progress we made, we had to in turn, bury. It?s like exhuming king Tutankhamen, and then burying him again. We installed power conduit, phone conduit and water line. Water pressure is enough to remove dandruff. Conduit is in ? thanks to John?s direction and Buck?s masterful skill at the backhoe. If it?s not obvious from the photos, he set and dug a straight line among the cemented posts that are only five feet apart. It?d be like driving a Hummer through a china shop. His skill is fantastic. Next week?s progress ? and from here on out is likely to be above ground, tangible and more photogenic. Thanks for your positive energy and your well wishes. The planting party will be, well, sometime soon. Perhaps not yet technically Spring, but close. TTFN, Markus This one, on a serious note from the guy who had to get rescued a couple weeks ago.... good guy!! >> Hi Mark, >> >> Just wanted to say hi, and sorry for all the trouble I caused over >> there.... saw your blog entry. >> Didn't get the chance to thank the folks from the coast guard in >> person but I appreciate all the help.
