post Forgot…. visitors blog day…..

November 19th, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — mark @ 10:56 am
yep.... damn storm had me a bit busy, forgot the Thursday.... Visitors Blog day..... and, we even heard from "the flounder'! So, the first up will be "Flounders"..... FLOUNDERS BLOG I thought i would share some of the highlights of our recent trip to the Big Island of Hawaii, well, at least the ones i can talk about..... Jess and I try to get over to the islands about twice a year, and it has become like a second home for us. We have a lot of good friends over there, and with each trip we always seem to make more. The folks on the Big Island truly have the Aloha spirit, and are more than happy to share it with you if you give them a chance. This was truly a special trip, as we were able to meet up with two very special old friends, Laird Flounder Hamilton and Gerry Flounder Lopez, great to see those two, especially since we share the same nicknames. Thats probably a little known fact, but now you know. When it comes to the surf, it was really rather small, so i gave a go at Stand Up Paddle Board. (This is purely to give Mark fuel for his jokes.....) I have to say, its a fun switch from regular surfing, and pretty damn fun when you get the hang of it. As usual, Jess is always a giver, so she took a job in one of the local surf shops to support all of my adventures....(picture attached). We also went out and did a little fishing, and of all things out there in the big blue, i caught a shark......nice 7 footer. Sorry to all you surfers, but the Hawaiians believe that sharks are the rebirth of a passed relative, so he got to be cut loose to live another day. All in all, one of my best trips over there, but its always nice to come home. Hope all of you had a good couple weeks as well. Be Good Humans, Flounder Next one from Kerry in N. San Diego County.... Got out at the north jetty at O'Side harbor about 7:30am. Waist - stomach high, maybe a chest-high set every once in a while. It was fun and everything was pretty cool until about an hour into the session when a group of about 8 guys paddled out thinking they were "all that." And they were pretty good, but it's not unusual for the caliber of surfing to be pretty good at Oceanside. It was their attitude that fucked up the whole vibe in the water. I've never seen these guys before, and I surf the north jetty a lot. I think they must have all pulled up in one van with ASSHOLES written on the side. Also got a couple of good wishes, one from Samoan Eric, and the other from "Lips" Hope all is well in the Coastal town of Cannon Beach. The news is showing some flooding. Hold down the fort Mark. See you when the storm passes. Guarantee the waves are going to be good. Samoan You guys are getting hammered again! Sorry to hear it. Hang in there < Lips We also got one from a student at OSU, looking for input from N Coast surfers.... Hello CB Surf! I am a graduate student in Oregon State University's Marine Resource Management program. For my Master's thesis project, I am attempting to learn more about certain recreational users of Oregon's oceans. Currently, there is a void in information on the needs, perspectives, composition, and contributions of these groups, which includes surfers (among others). My goal is to create a profile of these recreational user communities (I am a surfer and diver myself) so that we can better be represented in policy decisions regarding Oregon's oceans. This is the first study of its kind for Oregon. Without the information I hope to gather, I wonder if policy decisions might be made without giving our groups proper consideration. I write to you because I was hoping you would be willing to help. For the survey portion of my project, I want to get as many people involved as possible. I don't want to miss any perspectives or neglect anyone who might have potentially wanted to participate. I was hoping you would help me reach out to your network. I'd really love to hear more from the north coast. I've attached a writeup on the project that I have had success in getting posted on blogs, websites, newsletters, emailing lists, etc. Anything you could do to spread this to your network of friends, customers, etc. would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks! Respectfully, Christopher Eardley M.S. Candidate, Marine Resource Management College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences Oregon State University 104 COAS Admin Bldg. Corvallis, OR 97331 ceardley@coas.oregonstate.edu 541-737-5528 And last , but by far, not least.... my baby sister Mo and her newest damn dog....( I did get to see the little one leave a nice puddle in the middle of her kitchen when I was down there....one of the trip highlights) And, NO.... I did not clean it up!! Stay dry, and try to have a great day........ mark mekenas cbsurf@cannonbeachsurf.com www.cannonbeachsurf.com | www.bfdsurf.com

First pic is of Noho's new sweatshirts for his rest.'s...... He was here last night for our class...... got to get one of those sweats!!!! He said T-shirts are in the making...... This morning, we have had gusts of wind out of the south at 70mph... power was out for about a half hour, so one of my "chores" of the day will be to make sure the generators are ready to go...... Looks like the first big storm of the winter of 09'. As far as surf goes...... "screwed"....... but, for storm watchers, the next couple of days should be pretty wild.... Today W/SW Swell 18-21ft @ 8-12 sec's, S windes 40mph steady with gusts 75+mph. High tide at 11:15am, low at 6:15p. If you decide to walk the beach today, the tidal push will be pretty wild as well..... "don't turn your back on the ocean"...... we will have minus low tides for the next couple of days. Tuesday W/SW 22-26ft with SW winds 25-60mph. High tide at 12:30p, and minus low tide at 6am. Wed. morning will be a good one for the beachcombing, as the swell will drop to about W 15ft with S winds 30mph. Thursday W 18ft with S winds 35mph. Friday W 10-16ft with W winds 25mph. Sat. W 10ft dropping to W 6-7ft, Sunday W 6ft..... so, looks like Sat morning will be pretty wild, but getting better, then Sunday should be pretty good...... So..... have a great week.... should be a wild one down here!!

Raining this morning, but not as cold as yesterday.... high 40's to mid 50's.... S winds 20mph , gusting to 40mph later today. Swell is NW 6-9ft @ 11 sec's, but building to 14ft @ 13 sec's this evening. High tide at 10:40am, low at 5:40pm. Monday.... (guess I am not surfing) W/SW 15ft, building to 22ft with S winds 30mph and gusts 60mph. (shit!) Tuesday W/SW 20-25ft with SW winds 35mph Wed. SW 15ft with S winds 35mph Thursday SW 12ft, and Sat. drops to W 10ft..... next weekend showing some possibilities..... maybe a drive up to the straits this week.....??? So... got back, had some 650 emails , so if by chance I have not answered yours, I will try to get to some of them later this morning..... most are junk / spam... damn I would love to get my hands on some of the assmunches that send that crap.... who the hell would actually buy anything from a spam email!!???!??!?!? I want to meet the idiot that would do that!!! So...... had a couple of funny times down south... On Wed. had to drive up to Cherry Valley, Ca. to pick up some furniture with Sam, Sharon and Cathe, but I found that I was about a 1/2hour ahead of them.... so, thinking that Starbucks has internet access, and there was one right in front of me in Temecula, I thought hey....haven't been to one of those places in about 12 years..... so, pulled in, got one of their black coffee's and a piece of lemon pound cake.... then asked about the internet thing..... holy shit..... have to buy a card, then go on line to sign up... ( but, how do I get on line if I don't have the card??) then after the "approval", I get to use the internet.....well, even though the guy there was very pleasant, and a good salesperson, I opted not...... so, go out to the van, get my travel mug..... pull the plastic top off the starbucks coffee to pour it into my mug..... I get this "smell"... so, I do a quick smell check on my underarms to see if maybe I forgot to put some pit stuff on ..... no, I smell like an Irish fresh morning..... but, that smell is still there..... I lean down, to smell the coffee.... my god.... the smell IS the coffee..... damn.... not to be beaten by this , I go ahead and take a sip of this famous coffee (not cheap stuff!)..... Man... this stuff tastes like it smells..ass... terrible!! so, I dump it on the plants in the planter (they no doubt hate me now).... and go ahead and "dine " on the dry pound cake..... and head north on Winchester rd to Beaumont, where I found a MacD's... with drinkable coffee and NO internet........... Guess we are spoiled up here with our $1 cup of Columbia River Roaster "Thundermuck" Coffee that we sell...... I think I will wait another 12 years to try that most famous coffee..........

Junk. West winds this morning, some sun, some rain, some hail.....and again; west wind. Surf is pretty small considering the 14ft@10sec the reports are calling for this afternoon. Projected is NW wind 25-30kt gusts to 40kt, wind waves 7ft (yeah I believe that) and NW swell 14ft@10sec. Possible T-Storms again which we have had no shortage of this year! They've been great! Low tide today around 4pm. Weekend looks like this: Sat: S wind 15-20kt, NW swell 12ft@11sec Sun: S wind 25-30kt, NW swell 13ft Mon: S wind 30-35kt, combined seas to 18ft Big bossman is on his way back from his quick trip to Southern California. I hear waves were found, new wetsuits were granted, a couple of cocktails were consumed and some damn fine looking boards were scored! I, personally, am anticipating "The Pumpkin's" arrival..... MATUSE Tumo 5/4/3 hooded suits landed in the shop yesterday! Limited stock so if you were waiting for one, might wanna get yourself to the shop and grab one before I do. You're also going to need to take a look at the new Linden projects that we're working on...

Happy Birthday to Brook! More beautiful every year! Surf looks like it really came down last night. Report is calling for 9ft@11sec but it looks 5ft@9sec or so. Lots of water moving around at high tide this morning around 9. Slight S. winds this morning even though we're looking at NW later today. There may have been a wave to be had this morning up north. Weekend looking like we're going to get that bump in swell and wind, though most of this week the swell seemed quite exaggerated. Thurs: NW wind 15kt, 9ft@11sec Fri: SW wind 25-30kt, combined seas 16ft@10sec Sat: S wind 20-25kt, NW swell 13ft Sun: S wind 25-30kt, NW swell 13ft Boss-man is set to arrive tomorrow. Haven't heard a peep so that must mean he's driving responsibly as always......
